Behold the first completely FREE IPA keyboard on the App Store designed for linguists, language learners, and hobbyists. It is designed to be lightweight and fluid, matching up to the user experience of the system emoji keyboard. Includes ALL symbols on the newest standard IPA chart (2015 ver.). If the standard IPA layout doesn't work for you, I would suggest making a custom keyboard layout with Ukelele (or if you prefer text-based editing, KeyLayoutMaker). Alternatively, if you don't need quite the level of speed that can offer, you can simply use the Character Palette (Edit Emoji and Symbols) to type the characters by double-clicking them. There are some IPA fonts available on the web for download, but many, if not all of the IPA symbols (eg. Dʒ and ŋ ) can be found in the Unicode encoded fonts on your Mac. Most may not be available directly from the keyboard. To locate those that are, got to Syatem Preferences International Input menu and show the Keyboard Viewer. A “dead key” is a key that does not generate a character, but rather changes the character generated by a following keystroke. For example, in the IPA keyboard, to get the “ə”,you would type the dead key “=” followed by the “e” (=e). Charts showing the how all the IPA characters are made this way can be found in this PDF.

Note on Encoding and Fonts

If these sites are not displaying correctly, see the Browser Setup page for set up information.

It’s important that your browser encoding be set to display Unicode (UTF-8). In some cases, you may need to set the default font to one that includes phonetic characters.

Input Palettes For Phonetics

These programs provide a pop-up window which allows you to insert different phonetic characters. See pages for installation and usage instructions.

Web Development

This section presents information specific to Spanish. For general information about developing non-English Web sites, see the Encoding Tutorial or the Web Layout sections.

Declare Unicode

No matter which method you use to create the document, the HTML page must be declared as a Unicode page with the following meta-tag.

<head>
<meta http-equiv='Content-Type'>

</head>

Unicode Numeric Entity Codes

If you cannot use a Unicode phonetics input utilitiy or keyboard, then you can substitute numeric
entity codes instead. For example:

  • upside down R – ɹ(&#633;)
  • upside down capital R – ʁ(&#641;)
  • retroflex t (t-dot) – (&#7789;)

See the Main Numeric Entity Code Chart and the Diacritic
Chart for details.

Specifying Phonetic Font Styles

Although it is generally not recommended to specify fonts for a language,
it may a good option to make display consistent across browsers.

Below are the CSS style classes listing some suggested
font specifications.

The Layout

Kreative SuperIPA keyboard layout is based on CXS, a variant of
X-SAMPA, a mapping from ASCII to the International Phonetic Alphabet.
Most X-SAMPA mappings that use or ` for alternate characters can
be typed using Option on Mac OS X, Right Alt on Linux and Windows.
Diacritics can be typed using a Shift-Hyphen dead key on Mac OS X and
Windows (but not Linux), or direct key bindings on all supported systems.
